Welcome! | Wilkommen! | Benvenuto!

This is my travel blog, initially created for my around the world trip which started in October 2011 and ended in July 2012. Still, I will continue to travel from time to time and share here my experiences, thoughts and stories with you.

Ein Sonntag in Kpando | A Sunday in Kpando | Una domenica a Kpando

I tell you, life is pretty boring here in Kpando. During the weekdays I don't realize it, because I'm working with the kids and it's pretty exhausting. But on the weekend you just don't know what to do. There is nothing around here in Kpando: no restaurants, almost no bars, no cinema... So Jasmin and I decided to spend the Sunday as every other Ghanaian would do it.

We stood up very early in the morning (there is no way to sleep long in the morning since we can hear the goats and the neighbors screaming just next to our window starting from 5 am), put our best dress on and went to church. And this was really a highlight. The service lasted for 2 hours and unfortunately it was in Ewe so we couldn't understand anything. But even though it was very entertaining. First of all because of the dresses: all women were so colorful dressed. Then the music: The basic difference between a church at home and the one here in Ghana is that there is no organ. Instead, we could enjoy a cheerful and happy gospel singing accompanied by the sound of drums. This was a real party. Everybody singing, dancing and waving their hands up high!
The priest must have been a really good speaker: coming to the sermon he was involving the audience, people answered to his questions in chorus, asked questions and most of the time they were laughing out very loud. It was really a shame we couldn't understand.
We had lunch as usual at the orphanage and afterward we went to watch football at Kpando's stadium which is located just next to our house. To our surprise it was not just a field of sand but one with real grass. Kpando's local team (The Lions) were playing against a team from Cape Coast. The match was very dramatic and ended with a score of 1:1. Kpando's fans made the referee responsible for this disappointing result since he denied a penalty to them in the last minutes of the game. The angry fans run to the exit of the stadium after the match and for a short time, I thought it would end up in a big mess. But fortunately, it was just limited to shouting and screaming.

All in all, it was a funny Sunday. But I will take advantage to travel around in Ghana the next weekends.

Akwaaba and welcome to Ghana!

Akwaaba – willkommen in Ghana.

All of a sudden, the moment I had tried to imagine for the last few weeks was here. I felt this warm-wet air caressing my face and the land that a couple of hours before was still so far away was suddenly here. Akwaaba – welcome to Ghana. That was the first moment I could look forward thoughtlessly to my adventure. The farewell from my beloved ones was not really easy.

On the way to Accra I met Gabi at Frankfurt's airport. She is also Swiss and joining the volunteer program here in Ghana. On the ongoing flight I could chat with her and forget I little bit my worries about the unknown and I could finally also get some sleep. Six hours and an interrupted take off later (an air traffic controller had made wrong calculations about the airspace and apparently we would have come too close to a landing plane), we arrived in Accra with some delay. Paul was waiting there for us and some other volunteers and drove us to our hostel.

The orientation week started today at the education center with detailed information about geography, politics, history and safety recommendations and with a crash lesson in the local language Twi. The teachers are very dedicated and live entirely the Ghanaian hospitality. I have been here in Accra for only 24 hours and I'm positively impressed by the organization and cleanness of the city and the friendliness of the local people, I feel pretty comfortable here. I look forward to spending the next four days here, but I look even more forward to going to Kpando on Friday and to seeing what will expecting me there.

I wish you a good time, greetings

Akawaaba – benvenuta in Ghana.

A presto e cari saluti

First destination: Ghana!

My world tour will start with a 9 weeks assignement in Ghana where I will do some volunteer work. After an orientation week in the megacity Accra I will spend the rest of my stay near Kpando in the Volta Region where I will help in an orphanage. I will live with a guest family far away from modern urban life in a simple environment without running water, without fridge and all other things we take for granted here in Europe.
I really look forward to this adventure... and if you don't hear anything from me for a while, don't worry. Probably there won't be any internet connection.
